Connect to the serial console with an AWN101 Sensor using Windows

You can connect to the serial console with an AWN101 Sensor using Windows. You can use the serial console interface to restart, reconfigure, or run diagnostic tests on the sensor.

These resources are required:

  • An AWN101 Sensor
  • Black mini USB serial cable with a PL2303TA chipset
    Note: We recommend that you use the cable that came with the sensor. This cable has the necessary chipset installed.

Install the console session driver

  1. If your sensor was previously used for another console session, uninstall the previous driver.
  2. Use the black mini USB serial cable provided with your sensor to connect the sensor to your Windows device.
  3. Download the latest PL2303 Windows driver from the Resources tab of Prolific, and then extract the files.
  4. Open Device Manager with administrator permissions.
  5. Expand the Ports (COM&LPT) list.
  6. To download the driver, run the executable from the extracted files.
  7. Reboot your Windows machine.
  8. In Device Manager, in the Ports (COM & LPT) section, verify that the COM port name is Prolific USB-to-Serial Comm Port.

  9. Verify that the COM port is installed and functioning:
    1. In the Device Manager, with administrator permissions, expand the Ports (COM&LPT) list.
    2. Right-click the COM port name and then click Properties.
    3. Under Device status a message that reads This device is working properly. appears.

Connect to the serial console

  1. Open PuTTY.
  2. In the Session category, configure these settings:
    • Connection type — Select Serial.
    • Serial line — Enter the serial line for the console cable.
    • Speed — Enter 115200.
  3. Click Connection > Serial.
  4. In the Flow Control list, select None.
  5. Press Enter three times to initiate the serial console session.
