Connect to the serial console with a 200 series scanner using Windows

Connect to the serial console with an Arctic Wolf® 200 series Managed Risk Scanner using Windows. You can use the serial console interface to restart, reconfigure, or run diagnostic tests on the scanner.

These resources are required:

  • An AWN200 Managed Risk Scanner
  • Blue RJ45 to USB serial cable with a FT232R chipset

Install the console session driver

  1. If your scanner was previously used for another console session, uninstall the previous driver.
  2. Use the RJ45 to USB serial cable to connect the sensor to your Windows device.
  3. Open Device Manager with administrator permissions.
  4. Expand the Ports (COM&LPT) list.
  5. Verify that a COM port is listed under Ports (COM&LPT).
  6. If you do not see a COM port, or the device is listed as a generic PCI device in the Device Manager, complete these steps to install the drivers:
    1. Download the FT232R drivers for your operating system from ​FTDI Chip​, and then extract the files.
    2. Open Device Manager and then right-click the generic PCI device.
    3. Select Update Driver.
    4. In the How do you want to search for driver software? dialog, click Browse my computer for driver software .
    5. Click Browse, and then navigate to the extracted FTDI driver folder.
      Tip: The FTDI driver folder name should resemble CDM-v2.12.36.4-WHQL-Certified.
    6. Click OK.
    7. Select the Include subfolders check box to ensure that all applicable driver files are located, and then click Next.
      Windows processes the driver installation.
    8. When the driver installation is complete, a confirmation message that reads Windows has successfully updated your drivers appears.
    9. Open Device Managerand expand the Ports (COM & LPT) list to verify that a COM port is listed.

  7. Verify the COM port is installed and functioning:
    1. In the Device Manager, with administrator permissions, expand the Ports (COM&LPT) list.
    2. Right-click the COM port name and then click Properties.
    3. UnderDevice status a message that reads This device is working properly. appears.

Connect to the serial console

  1. Open PuTTY.
  2. In the Session category, configure these settings:
    • Connection type — Select Serial.
    • Serial line — Enter the serial line for the console cable.
    • Speed — Enter 115200.
  3. Click Connection > Serial.
  4. In the Flow Control list, select None.
  5. Press Enter three times to initiate the serial console session.
